Hike to the Kilpatrick hills

On Friday, we headed up to the Kilpatrick Hills for a walk combined with a practical navigation session. Surrounded by open landscapes and fresh air, it was the perfect setting to slow down, connect with nature, and build confidence in essential outdoor skills.

A key focus of the day was learning and practising navigation techniques that can be used in low visibility or unfamiliar terrain. One of the most useful skills we explored was working out how many steps you take over 100 metres. By understanding your own pace count, you can better judge distance travelled, helping you avoid going too far or not far enough, especially when walking at night or in poor visibility.

The trip was not only about learning new skills, but also about enjoying time together outdoors — taking in the views, having conversations along the way, and appreciating the benefits that being in nature can bring to our wellbeing.

We’re looking forward to more days like this, combining practical learning with time spent outdoors.
