Health Issues in the Community Course- Wednesdays 9:30am-12pm

An exciting new addition to the Outdoors for You programme begins on Wednesday 15th of January from 9:30am-12pm. There is still time to register for this 8 week course, with details below:

What will this entail?

8 weeks of weekly workshops exploring health, health in our social context, and approaches to understanding and standing up for health in our communities.

Option to gain a nationally recognised qualification- this requires participation in a group project and completion of a short-written assignment (this can be done with a scribe).

Opportunity to present project findings at an exhibition at Glasgow University as part of a weeklong exhibition!  

Chance to meet others within our communities and explore important topics in a relaxed and friendly space.

Learning Objectives:

On completion of the course, it is intended that participants will be able to:

• Demonstrate an understanding of a social model of health and other key ideas about health and explain how these models/ ideas relate to their own lives and communities.

• Demonstrate an understanding of the causes of health inequalities and the impact they have on different groups in society.

• Demonstrate a general understanding of community development approaches to tackling health inequalities and how these can be applied.

• Participate effectively in a group process and collect, organise, and present information using a variety of methods.

• Reflect on own learning and practice and analyse strengths and weaknesses.

What are the key dates?

Wednesdays 9:30am-12:00pm

15th, 22nd , 29th January

5th ,12th , (BREAK 19th), 26th February

5th, 12th , 26th March

(Exhibition from 24th of March, Exhibition open evening 26th March 5-8pm)

Who can participate?

Anyone who is interested! We particularly welcome those from black and minority ethnic backgrounds, and individuals who are experiencing, or have experienced, the asylum process.

FAQs

Do I need to attend every week?

No, however, if you would like to gain the qualification it is required to attend 6 out of 8 sessions and complete the group project.

Do I need to pay anything to attend?

Nothing!

Do I need to speak English?

Unfortunately, we cannot provide translation this time around, so intermediate English is required. However, written projects can be completed with the help of a scribe!

Are expenses covered?

Travel expenses for refugees and asylum seekers will be covered. Hot drinks and snacks will be provided weekly.
