500 Miles Up North Challenge Complete!

We are delighted that Katie and Maria completed their fundraising challenge with no major disasters! We hope you enjoy this brief diary of their ride:

Day 1: Katie and Maria kicked off their challenge with an intense 112-kilometre ride! The weather was anything but kind, with a mix of sunshine, rain, terrible wind, and even hailstones. But they pushed through, including up and over the notorious Bealach Na Ba pass of 2053ft.

Day 2: Katie and Maria cycled just under 123 km, from Applecross to Gruinard Bay Caravan Park. Passing through breathtaking coastal landscapes to Sheildaig into the epic mountain-scapes of Torridon, the scenery was a reward for the testing rain showers and blustery winds.

Day 3: Katie and Maria covered 121 km from Gruinard Bay to Achmelvich. The scenery was absolutely spectacular, even though the rain didn’t let up this time! But arriving at a beautiful beach at the end of the day made it all worthwhile.

Day 4: Katie and Maria rode 96.5 km from Achmelvich to Durness and had much better luck with the weather. Passing through Assynt and embracing long, tough climbs with the thought of the downhills spurring them on. Setting up camp above one of the most beautiful beaches, they thought they had hit the jackpot.

Day 5: Durness to Forsinard- 114.5km. This day started with pouring rain, battering down on the tents through the night and the wind making them feel like they were preparing to take off! Thankfully, this cleared by lunchtime and the cycle allowed for some more beautiful views, and even some rainbows! However, it was a tough day where they could really feel the strain in their bodies. Exhausted from a very unpleasant night in the tent due to the bad weather, they decided to treat themselves to a stay in a B&B to recharge.

Day 6: Forsinard to Bonar Bridge 109km. This day would have been perfect if it weren’t for the headwind! Despite that, Katie and Maria enjoyed the sunshine, stunning views, and peaceful roads. They were definitely feeling tired, but knowing that there was only one more day of the challenge was keeping them motivated.

And just like that, day 7 is complete! 110km from Bonar Bridge to Urquhart Castle.

We are pleased to say that Maria and Katie finished their 500 miles up North challenge on the 30th of August. Day 7 provided some respite from the rain and the wind, ensuring big smiles over the finishing line.

A huge thank you to everyone for their ongoing support (including Jan and her support van 🚐) and generous donations, we are hugely appreciative and hope you have enjoyed following this journey!
